Week 49

Hi everyone,

We have finished up our work on river cultures, and we're currently in the midst of presentations. We have also finally gotten around to decorate the classroom a bit, and the Christmas feeling is warming our hearts, while our minds stay stimulated.

For Science we finished up our work with magnets and electromagnets. Now we just need to finish up the last scientific inquiry on amplifying the power of an electromagnet. We worked on it Thursday, and the written inquiry is to be completed and left in Monday the 9th.

Next Friday it's Lucia, and after the morning Lucia parade, we're having a Christmas party in class. Please, once you've finished your science work, think about what you want to bring for the party.

We need food/snacks, drinks, more snacks, possibly popcorn/snacks, more drinks, some plastic cups and paper plates would also be welcomed. We'll try to gather a list of what you want to/can bring, on Monday.

Here's a few pictures from our class this week, and a few pictures of the scientific method with the assignment posted at the end of this post.

  1. Amplify the power of your electromagnet

Before we start:.
- Where do you think we use electromagnets in our homes (p. 36-39)?

- Write down two variables that you think affects how strong an electromagnet is,
and that we would need to adjust if we wanted to make the strongest electromagnet
possible.

Assignment “Increasing the electromagnet’s strength”

You’ll need:
2 batteries and holders
1 switch
1 iron screw
1 brass screw
1 copper wire 150cm
20 paper clips
2 copper wires 20cm

Your task:
In the previous assignment you created an electromagnet, and we found a connection
between between power, copper wire coil, and iron. If done correctly, one could even
use the magnet to pick up some paper clips or even a screw.
1. Now you need to carry out a systematic experiment starting with recreating the magnet
from assignment nr. 9. Your assignment is to conduct experiments to amplify the magnet
and make it as strong as possible. Make sure you write a scientific inquiry for every
experiment you conduct.

You will be graded on your written descriptions of each experiment, your scientific process,
the ability to recreate the experiment from your scientific inquiry, and your reasoning in
reflect, conclude and summarize.

Reflect, conclude and summarize:

- How many experiments/tests did you conduct?.

- Draw and describe your experiment?

- Write a description of the strongest electromagnet you built. How strong, what materials,
and what made it stronger?
