Sports Holidays

Hi everyone,

We had a really great day today. I was extremely happy with how attentive and engaged the class were in todays tasks. Todays tasks may not all have been the most fun, but again, I was really happy with how the class worked.

I realise that, as I'm finally getting around to posting this, it is no longer Friday. But, we had a returning spelling bee champion this week. The finalists were Ayesha, Weiyang, Pascale, Aadithya and Rohin, but Weiyang took the gold by spelling "Suspicion". Apostrophe, necessary and dialogue were all amongst our hardest words of the day.

Get that Totto Chan homework over with as fast as possible, so that you can all enjoy a wonderful week without me. I'm already missing the class, both our students and all the stuff I really need to sort.

I look forward to seeing you all relaxed and well rested after a week of cooking and taking care of your parents.

Week 8 update

Hi all,

For this coming week we will have no math homework. The only homework for next week is: frequent reading, and catching up on all the Totto Chan homework - I will post the homework for chapters 12-14 on the Literacy blog, which are the chapter we need to be caught up to after the holidays.

Even though we still have a few social incidents in class being dealt with, I'm actually really happy with where our classroom environment is at. Teacher Anna and I had a meeting preparing a few emotional quotient tasks that will take place after the holidays.

For Math we're uncovering the depths of geometry, which will also be our focus after the holidays. I'll give out a small geometry workbook, but everything will be covered in class. We'll finish this with a geometry test a week or two after we're back.

For English our steady work with Totto Chan is in focus, and we're also touching base with our reading comprehension throughout the week.

For Science circuits will be the focus for at least the next three school weeks, and possibly a little longer.

For Social studies, we're finishing up our prior knowledge on beliefs/religions, and after the holidays we will shift our focus to the vikings. We will return to "modern" beliefs after the vikings.

From tomorrow, 21st February, I will give the phone hotel to Klubben after school ends (for the students in Klubben). Teacher Marian will receive the phones, so if you need to reach your child, please call Klubben directly.

I have been prompted by the office to remind everyone to speak loudly and clearly when calling in regarding sick leave. The office has a really hard time decoding parent names as well as the actual name of the sick children. In regards to this, I would also like to address that there's has been an increase in late arrivals and absentees compared to last term.

Mobile Usage - Whatsapp

Hi everyone,

We had a fairly constructive chat during our class meeting today, and, although other issues were raised and are being dealt with, I just wanted to remind all parents that according to the Whatsapp terms of service one has to be 13 years of age.

We had a good discussion about online safety, rules and consequences. So, this is just to be a short informative post, as I'll post a regular update later today/tonight - I hope. :)

"Age. You must be at least 13 years old to use our Services (or such greater age required in your country for you to be authorized to use our Services without parental approval). In addition to being of the minimum required age to use our Services under applicable law, if you are not old enough to have authority to agree to our Terms in your country, your parent or guardian must agree to our Terms on your behalf."

Swimming

Hi,

We’re just finishing up Swimming. We would appreciate if the boys could keep an eye out for a black wristwatch, as one of our students is missing his. He’ll take an extra good look in his bags later tonight, but just keep an eye out in case it fell in another’s bag while rushing.

We asked i. the office, and they hadn’t received any watches, but we’ll ask again next week in case it is not found tonight :)

Valentines Day

Hi all,

We had a great day ice-skating at Kungsträdgården. I hope you'll enjoy the pictures of today's excursion, and I've also updated the Totto Chan homework on the literacy blog. I will try to find a few good assignments for geometry using Geogebra, and I'll add them to the numeracy blog when ready.

Also, it has come to my attention that we did not announce the Spelling Bee winner last week. Inay and Bhavika fought a long battle, but Inay took the prize by spelling "Economics"

The video is unlisted, so only people with the link can access the clip.

Homework Checklist, Ice-skating

Hi everyone,

Homework
In coordination with new vice principal and my teacher APT, it has been agreed that we do not feel that reading 20 min a night should have to be a homework task, but rather a soft requirement.
This means that we can have the Totto Chan homework that covers English, Science, and Social Studies, as a mandatory task.
For this, the first time, I have chosen to copy up the Totto Chan homework. I will, in addition to this, also add these assignments to the Literacy blog. And, in the future the homework will only be accessible on our class blog, rather than printouts. Please  refrain from using our entire school journal for these assignments, but use regular lined paper that can easily be transferred into our school binders.

Weekly Homework checklist:
1. School Journal - Filled in with weekly news, date etc.
2. School Journal - Summary of the chapters read in a chapter book
3. Totto Chan homework - on lined paper (to be put in our binders)
4. Mathematics - 1-2 pages in the workbook
5. Practice Spelling Bee words

Extra: reading 5 nights a week

This is of course still all due Tuesday morning.

Spelling Bee
I'll also take this time to finally give some credit to our Spelling Bee winners this year. The 19th Ayesha won with the word "Moraine", the 26th Zeno won by spelling "Syllables", and lastly this Friday "Weiyang" won by spelling Dandruff. There has been a pleasant development with this weekly event, which is that we have had a significant increase in the amount of students that practice the words for the bee.

Ice-skating
Wednesday 14 February, is a class day, which means that our school day runs from 9-13.45. We're going to join together with the English and Swedish 4th and 5th graders to go Ice-skating on a lake or on an ice-skating rink. Bring a helmet, warm clothes, packed lunch and a thermos with warm tea or cocoa on this Wednesday. If you own a pair of ice-skates please bring them as well, and I will try to steal the school ones sometime this week, to have as many pairs in reserve as possible.

Now that I'm just about to post this info, I will most likely find something really important that I've forgotten. But, just make sure you're up to date with our new addition to our homework - Totto Chan, and with Ice-skating on 14 February.

Kind Regards,

What a week

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to thank everyone for today at the open house. This was my first open house, and I appreciate the feedback from my earlier poll, and I think the class was fairly reminiscent of their behaviour with me on a regular day.

Surely enough I yet again forgot to give out the voluntary Totto Chan Homework. But, for now I have updated the two tabs you see above in the menu for our Wonderful4en - Literacy and Numeracy, with the links to our Scott Foresman Textbooks under math, and with a picture of the Totto Chan homework on the Literacy page. I also added the spelling bee wordlist, but I'm sure you'll find it all when you give those two tabs a look.

Kind Regards,

The homework I scrapped, due to reading

Voluntary homework assignments:

Due to quite a large part of our students not reading 20min five nights a week, I earlier this year chose to change the homework routine to require weekly summaries. This unfortunately took away the scheduled homework for the term, but as a few parents asked, I will provide a voluntary worksheet every week.

This voluntary homework is connected to our class reading book "Totto Chan", and was planned to be our regular scheduled homework for the term. So, if you choose to work with this, I appreciate the extra effort, as reading shouldn't really have to be enforced as part of our scheduled homework, but rather a necessary pastime for exposure.

I will also enter our class in a math competition, recommended by the Swedish grade 4 teacher. I'm not exactly certain how it works, but if I understand it correctly - it's an online math site that one can go and complete tasks. So, hopefully, this means that one can practice from home.

I have also earlier provided the link for our math and science books used in school, so these are also readily available for extra practice or research.

I will fiddle a bit with the blog during the weekend, just to see if I can pin a post all the information and links necessary.

This was just a short update on voluntary extra work, and the first Totto Chan worksheet will follow home today Friday, and one should follow each Tuesday with the regular mandatory homework.

Edit: We forgot the first homework sheet, but I will post a picture of it tonight - possibly :)
Kind Regards,

//Teacher John
